FAQs

Does the Tempest WINDmeter include a built-in compass?

No, the WINDmeter does not contain an internal magnetometer. It uses the compass heading from your connected smartphone or tablet. The WEATHERmeter for Precision Shooting is the only WeatherFlow meter equipped with an internal compass.

Is the WINDmeter app available for free?

Yes! The free ‘Wind & Weather Meter’ app can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play. The WINDmeter also works seamlessly with apps like iKitesurf, iWindsurf, SailFlow, FishWeather, and WindAlert.

What devices are compatible with the Tempest WINDmeter?

The WINDmeter connects to Apple iPhones 4S or newer and iPads Generation 3 or newer (iOS 6.0+). It also works with Bluetooth Smart Ready Android devices running version 4.3 (Jelly Bean) or newer.

How do I mount or use the WINDmeter?

You can either hold the WINDmeter by hand or attach it to any standard 1/4-20 camera mount. This versatility allows you to easily position it for accurate wind measurements.

Direction accuracy questionable

The direction reading is inaccurate. I don’t know if the readings are off because the firmware needs to be updated. I have an iPhone 13 and the latest app is installed. There are a number of issues with buttons not working or buttons that should not be available with the Windmeter. The firmware button does not work at that is concerning. The meter is a great idea I thought maybe a lot of the bugs would be identified before making it available.

Thanks for the feedback William! The WINDmeter does not have an internal magnetometer so the wind direction reading will come from the direction your smartphone is pointed in. If it still doesn't appear to be working properly please send us a message directly here: https://help.tempest.earth/hc/en-us/requests/new

Thanks!

If you do wind sports, this is worth it

I purchased this for taking wind readings before I go Kiteboarding. I've used it several times and I absolutley love it. It appears very accurate, especially for what I use it for. I consider myself able to judge the winds fairly well without it when I'm about to go Kiteboarding, however, it's nice to know exactly what the winds blowing at the spot I'm at, so that I can have an additional wind meter other than the ones on WindAlert.

I highly recommend this purchase to anyone who does wind sports, such as kiteboarding or wind surfing. It's worth the money.

I use this meter almost each time I fly.

I started using it in Santa Barbara, California and now use it in Costa Rica. An App is required to be downloaded to your cell phone. I had to dig around for the download from the company site but once I found it and downloaded I had no issues and everything worked well. In fact, I did the download on two different phones and it worked well for both. The wind speed units can easily be changed from Km/h to Miles/hour and back super easily. Average speed, wind gusts, and wind direction are all provided in an easily to read display.
